Collaborate
ISLANDS OF LA is an in-public project in Los Angeles that changes the way we use public space. Regardless of where you live, you are invited to interchange by collaborating with Islands of LA. Feel free to go out and do something and send it in or tell us what you have in mind and we can do it together. Both possible and impossible ideas are welcome.
You can post your idea here or send in an email.
Also, if you would like to submit a story of something you did or know about that happened on a traffic island, please do so here.

if you’re on hoover st., north of venice, every road intersection that goes east is on the 26th degree orientation, meaning there’s about 6 islands requiring reclamation. (only one has actually been reclaimed by the city, at the lake st./pico blvd/ hoover st. intersection)

Traffic Island West of Slauson near Culver City by Ladera Heights has a bus stop, rather than just dividing traffic it divides homes from traffic. Check it out, hope to see a sign next time I drive by there.

what an excellent project! i can’t wait to get there. i’ll host tea parties on the islands. and then some. is that allowed?

What is allowed is an important question. Islands of LA views these public, marginal spaces as areas where we can interact as long as it is done in a safe and responsible manner. There are definitely some islands large enough to do a tea party. When you get here we can talk about how it fits the context of the project and islands and set something up.

My little brother wants to visit and I have a small apt. His comment:
“I remember this little island. Can one get a camping permit?”

How about installation art that is on place for only a few days but makes a statement about how we live. For instance:
something to symbolize the number of chicken killed daily to feed LA
A car counting display board. showing the number of cars going past that spot.
A free book event (Libraries are throwing away a lot of books)
A pyramid made out of discarded computer moniters
A Henge made out of discarded christmas trees
The Islands are ours. Try http://www.cafepress.com for a way to do tshirts etc. No investment.
